About
I’ve been in the room. At 2 a.m. With a family who just lost someone.

John Moelker — Engineer · Grief-Care Practitioner · Founder
I spent fifteen years as a software engineer before I spent fifteen years in pastoral ministry and grief-support work. The second career brought me into hospital bedside care, bereavement support groups, and — yes — being the person families called when someone died. Not to schedule anything. To be present.
During that pastoral chapter I trained through Clinical Pastoral Education — the structured pastoral-care training used in hospital chaplaincy, hospice work, and crisis response. One unit, one supervised summer. I also went through Stephen Leader training — a lay pastoral care framework built around one-to-one listening and presence. CPE is not about what to say. It is about how to listen when someone is too overwhelmed to organize their grief into sentences.
Now I am bringing both seasons together. The engineering background gave me the tools to build it. The pastoral formation gave me the reason to. I know what it costs a family when the first voice they hear — in the hours after a death — is a voicemail prompt. I built FuneralWiseAI because I knew this could be done better. Not just automated. Actually done better.
The HEAR protocol built into every FuneralWiseAI call is not a marketing term. It is the same framework I learned in a hospital room. Hear the person. Empathize before you move. Advance at their pace. Respond with what they actually need. It is how trained grief-care professionals listen. It is how an AI can listen, too — if you build it the right way.
I did not build a phone tree. I built an agent that takes grief seriously. There is a difference. Funeral directors who have used it can tell the difference. The families who have called at 2 a.m. and been heard — they certainly can.
Why grief-care credentials matter
The training behind the technology.
The HEAR protocol did not come from a product specification. It came from structured pastoral-care training and fifteen years of direct grief-support work. That background is not incidental to FuneralWiseAI. It is the entire reason it works.
15 years in software engineering
Production systems, API design, distributed architecture — the technical foundation built before the pastoral chapter began. Now the engine behind everything FuneralWiseAI does.
15 years in grief care and crisis response
Bereavement support, hospital bedside care, grief groups, death notification accompaniment. Not as a bystander — as the person the family called first.
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
One completed CPE unit — hospital-based grief care and crisis listening, with direct supervised work alongside families in acute bereavement. The clinical formation behind the HEAR protocol.
Stephen Leader Training
Trained in the Stephen model — a rigorous lay-care framework for one-to-one grief support and crisis listening. The same listening discipline behind HEAR.
Mission
A portion of every subscription funds our mission work.
WiseAI Agency (the parent company) funds subsidized AI tools for community organizations that cannot afford commercial pricing. FuneralWiseAI subscriptions support that work directly. If you are buying this because it solves a real problem for your funeral home, you are also helping under-resourced organizations answer their calls. Learn more →
